PLEASE CHECK BACK LATER FOR MORE UPDATED INFORMATION ABOUT THE JACL INTERNSHIP FOR SUMMER 2014
What is the JACL? The San Fernando Valley chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League is the Valley’s oldest Asian American civil rights organization. In addition to our advocacy for issues such as civil liberties, marriage equality, and immigration reform, we sponsor two educational programs from June 13-August 22, with which the intern will assist: Katarou Histories Is a multimedia public history project that engages community members across generations to uncover and record the diverse histories of Japanese Americans in the Valley. Katarou means “lets share stories” in Japanese and this is the primary purpose of this program. Suzume No Gakkou Is a summer camp that teaches youngsters about Japanese and Japanese American history and culture through arts and crafts, story time, music, basic Japanese language, and a trip to the Japanese American National Museum. Intern Responsibilities The summer intern will assist with these programs and be based at the San Fernando Valley JA Community Center in Pacoima and occasionally at the JACL office in Little Tokyo to learn about programs and networks in the larger JA and Asian American community. Interns can also propose an independent research project relevant to the work of the San Fernando Valley JACL (this is optional). Intern must produce a deliverable, such as a website, blog, or short video documenting the two programs. The intern will receive $750 at the beginning of the internship and $750 upon the successful completion of the deliverable. More detailed information is available in the guidelines. |
