API Equality LA is an organization that "advocates in the Greater Los Angeles API Community for the fair treatment of LGBT people and marriage equality." Later this month they will be paying tribute to the "pioneers" of the API/LGBT movement, including our past president Tak Yamamoto. Tak who was instrumental in organizing the National JACL's marriage equality platform. Please join us for this celebration which includes a new documentary about Yamamoto and fellow activist June Lagmay.

Asian American Lesbian and Gay Pioneers in Los Angeles Although their stories are not well-known, Asian Americans participated actively in the nascent LGBT civil rights movement in Southern California. API Equality-LA honors two such pioneers with short films featuring Tak Yamamoto and June Lagmay, who in 1980 were founders of Asian Pacific Lesbians and Gays, the first gay Asian organization in Los Angeles.
Yamamoto also served as President of the San Fernando Valley chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League and was instrumental in getting the national organization to support same-sex marriage in 1994. Lagmay has been active in local politics and Asian community affairs and currently serves as the Clerk of the City of Los Angeles.
The films are part of API Equality-LA's newest initiative, the Pioneers Oral History Project, to document and share these courageous, outrageous, and sometimes hilarious stories and preserve them for generations to come.
After the screening June Lagmay will talk about the early days of queer love and liberation. Reception to follow. Co-presented with the Japanese American National Museum
